Why Leadership Teams Lose Focus and What to Do About It

May 22, 2025

Let’s be honest: most leadership teams don’t struggle with vision—they struggle with execution. They know what needs to get done, but staying focused long enough to actually do it? That’s the battle.

In theory, senior executives should be the most focused people in the organization. They have clarity, authority, and access to resources. In reality, they’re often the most distracted.

Why? Because they’re pulled in a thousand directions—board expectations, investor pressure, internal politics, conflicting departmental priorities, and whatever the latest fire of the week is. Strategy becomes reactive. Execution becomes fragmented. And instead of forward momentum, you get a lot of motion with very little movement.

The Myth of “We’ve Got It Covered”

There’s a dangerous assumption that once you’ve built a leadership team, it should be self-managing and self-correcting. That’s fiction. The truth is, even the sharpest executive teams fall prey to three traps:

Prioritization Paralysis: Everything’s urgent. Everything’s a top priority. So nothing truly moves forward.

Misaligned Agendas: Everyone says they’re rowing in the same direction, but when you lift the hood, different leaders have different interpretations of what success looks like.

Lack of Accountability: At the leadership level, accountability becomes soft. Everyone is “working on it,” but no one’s really driving it. It’s not because they don’t care - it’s because they’re overloaded and under-challenged on focus.

If any of this feels familiar, ask yourself:

Are we truly aligned on the top 3 priorities for the next 90 days—or are we chasing too many initiatives at once?

Do my direct reports have clarity on what success looks like in their role—and are they held to it?

When was the last time we said “no” to a project, not because it was bad, but because it distracted us from something better?

These aren’t rhetorical questions. They’re performance indicators.
